Colchester Depot Redevelopment

FJD Consulting have been commissioned to provide multidisciplinary design support for a new fuel facility at a depot in Colchester which was part of Greater Anglia’s redevelopment scheme.

OVERVIEW
As an integral component of Greater Anglia’s New Trains Programme, aimed at replacing outdated trains with cutting-edge modern models, significant upgrades to existing depots and stabling facilities were paramount. These enhancements were necessary to accommodate the new fleet, characterized by longer, lighter trains boasting additional features.

PROJECT INVOLVEMENT
FJD Consulting have been commissioned to provide multidisciplinary design support for a new fuel facility at a depot in Colchester which was part of Greater Anglia’s redevelopment scheme.

Drawing on our team’s comprehensive expertise, we delivered:
Civils Design Services for:
- Concrete foundations for 2No. 40,000L fuel storage tanks, 10,000L Adblue storage tank, Sanding silo, Sanding plant room and Fuel plant room;
-Drainage design for the new compound including storage for fuel tanker emergency discharge and associated connection to existing sewer system with oil interception tank;
- Compound approach road slabs and refuelling slab;
- Compound ducting, fencing and signage, including specifications;
- Design of a new service trench within the existing maintenance shed for Adblue, fuel and CET units.

Geotechnical Design Services for:
- A new 5 track, 2.5m deep guided auger bored undertrack crossing including temporary works to facilitate installation to take fuel, adblue and sanding facilities from the depot on the North side of the tracks to the maintenance shed on the south side;
- Ground improvements within the fuelling storage depot due to the introduction of significant load from the fuel and sanding storage tanks.

M&E Design Services as follows:
- Design and Specification of a new electrical system for Fuelling, CET and AdBlue, including compound lighting for an area classified as DSEAR, ATEX Zone 1;
- Electrical Calculations, including submains and final circuits;
- Lighting Calculations and Lux level plots;
- Electrical Schematics;
- Lighting Control Wiring;
- Hazardous area equipment specifications;
- GRP Cable Containment and requirements for specification of underground ducts;
- Consultancy services relating to the upgrade of existing electrical infrastructure to facilitate the project.

Earthing and Bonding
- Design and specification of Supplementary and Equipotential bonding;
- Design and specification of GRP shroud for touch potential mitigation to adjacent OLE Pole;
- Design and Specification for Electrical ‘discontinuity’ of fences to ensure earth arrangements were not exported elsewhere;
- Liaison and design integration with Lighting protection specialist.

Electrical Load Assessment
- Detailed load analysis of proposed equipment;
- Load monitoring of existing infrastructure and analysis of results to ensure supply capacity;
- Assessment of existing substations.

Distribution Network Operator
- Design coordination and Liaison with UK Power Networks to facilitate new infrastructure connections and to determine existing HV capability;
- New applications and quotations;
- Design of a double-sided GRP electrical supply cubicle incorporating 400A distribution equipment and DNO equipment.
