FJD Consulting worked with the client to produce a design for a UTX near Lewisham in London. The UTX was required to cross the railway underneath two lines on an embankment, but tie into a route at the base of the embankment.
Utilising design review meetings and efficient, regular liaison with the client, we were able to identify risks and constructability concerns associated with designing a chamber for a retaining wall at the top of the embankment.
We drew up an initial design of a sloping UTX into a reception pit at the base of the embankment, before
getting client buy in to fully develop this through the approval process.
We innovated through use of an existing precast culvert design that met the requirements of our proposed reception pit and ensured that the slope of the crossing itself maintained enough depth to be compliant with the relevant Network Rail Standard, but shallow enough to enable propriety temporary shoring to be used.
